报告摘要:
Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by low bone mass and deteriorated bone tissues and architecture, leading to the risk of fracture. My research team is involved in basic and clinical research utilizing ultrasonic and mechanical techniques to study and image bone tissues. Ultrasound renders a potential remote sensing method to evaluate bone quality, especially the mechanical properties of bone. Ultrasonic interaction with bone tissues is complicated and the understanding of the underlying mechanisms will ultimately help us derive better mathematical bone models to assist in the interpretation of clinical data. Other imaging modalities such as CT, micro-CT and MRI will be used to supplement the studies.
Our ultimate objectives are to develop ultrasound-based technologies and instrumentation to deliver better patient care in the area of improved diagnostics, monitoring and management of osteoporosis, scoliosis and osteoarthritis.
The research direction has several aspects. The first focus is to develop novel physics-based imaging/signal techniques to study osteoporosis and scoliosis. The techniques used are to back-propagate the ultrasound wave fields to image the internal structures of bone tissues. The second focus is to develop practical ultrasound techniques to improve precision of and to guide clinical procedures. The third is to use x-ray and ultrasound data to assist in the diagnostics and monitoring of scoliosis.
